Open Enrollment 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before November 1

May 12, 20269 min readBy Advisor Shield Health

Open Enrollment is your one guaranteed annual opportunity to switch, upgrade, or newly enroll in a health insurance plan — no questions asked, no qualifying life event required. If you miss it, you wait a full year (unless a qualifying event occurs). Here's everything you need to know to prepare, compare, and enroll with confidence before January 15.

The dates that matter

What's changing for 2026

Subsidies are still expanded

The enhanced premium tax credits that began under the American Rescue Plan continue to apply, meaning many households earning above the historical 400% FPL cap still qualify for meaningful premium assistance. A family of four earning up to roughly $124,800 may still qualify for subsidies in 2026.

Network and formulary changes

Carriers update their provider networks and drug formularies every year. The plan you loved in 2025 may have dropped your doctor or moved your medication to a higher tier. This is the #1 reason we tell clients to re-shop every Open Enrollment — even if you're "happy" with your current plan.

Premium changes

Most carriers file rate changes for the next plan year. Some go up, some go down, and the relative ranking between plans always shifts. The cheapest Silver plan in your ZIP code in 2025 is rarely the cheapest in 2026.

Your 4-step Open Enrollment checklist

  1. Gather your numbers — household size, expected 2026 income, current medications, and a list of doctors you want to keep.
  2. Re-check your subsidy — income changes and family changes both affect your premium tax credit. Don't auto-renew without recalculating.
  3. Compare 3 plans across tiers — usually one Bronze, one Silver, one Gold. The right answer depends on how often you use care, not which has the lowest premium.
  4. Enroll by December 15 if possible — guarantees a clean January 1 start with no coverage gap.

Should you pick Bronze, Silver, or Gold?

Bronze — lowest premium, highest deductibleBest for: healthy, low-usage adults
Silver — mid premium, mid deductible (subsidy magnet)Best for: most subsidy-eligible households
Gold — higher premium, low deductibleBest for: chronic conditions, frequent care, expecting parents
HDHP + HSA — low premium, tax-advantaged savingsBest for: high earners, healthy savers

If you qualify for subsidies, Silver plans get a unique boost called Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSR) that lower your deductible and copays — often making Silver the best overall value even if Bronze looks cheaper on paper.

Special Enrollment — what if you miss it?

If you miss Open Enrollment, you can only enroll after a qualifying life event:

  • Losing job-based coverage (60-day window)
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a baby
  • Moving to a new coverage area
  • Aging off a parent's plan at 26
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen or lawful resident

Outside those events, you're either waiting until next year or relying on short-term coverage as a bridge. Both are fine — neither is as good as enrolling now.

Frequently asked

Can I switch plans during Open Enrollment if I already have one?

Yes. You can change carriers, change metal tiers, add or drop dependents, or move from a marketplace plan to an off-marketplace plan freely during Open Enrollment.

Will I be auto-renewed if I do nothing?

Most marketplaces will auto-renew you into the same or a similar plan. This is risky — premiums, networks, and formularies change every year. Always re-shop before auto-renewal takes effect.

What if my income changes mid-year?

Report it to the marketplace right away. Subsidies are reconciled at tax time, so under-reporting income can lead to owing money back; over-reporting can mean you paid more than you needed to.
